Volunteers play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of Colleton Medical Center.

Our mission statement clarifies our purpose: “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.” As such, those looking to participate in this program must be willing to make a solid commitment and be passionate about serving the people of our community to ensure they receive the best possible care.

Onboarding process

The steps below address the onboarding process for becoming a Colleton Medical Center volunteer. All steps in the process will need to be completed so please review carefully. If for some reason you are not able at this time to complete the process then there is no need to proceed. Those looking to volunteer for only a short time or only looking to volunteer until finding a job are discouraged from applying. Volunteering is recommended only for those who can make a more long-term commitment to the volunteer program.

Step 1: Complete the volunteer application and background check consent form

All sections on the application and background check consent form are to be completed in their entirety and returned to the Director of Volunteer Services.

Step 2: Pass a background check

The Human Resources Department will conduct the background check and will notify you that you have cleared and then you will be contacted shortly thereafter by Employee Health.

Step 3: Pass a health screening

You will be contacted by Employee Health to schedule a health screening appointment. At this appointment you…

  • Will be given a TB and drug screening.
  • Will have your picture taken for your ID badge. You will receive your badge when you return for orientation/training.
  • Will need to bring your COVID-19 vaccination card and Proof of Flu Vaccination (October-March)

Step 4: Attend orientation at Colleton Medical Center

Once the Director has been notified that you have cleared your health screening, you will be contacted to schedule orientation.

Frequently asked questions

COVID-19

Yes! At this time, all volunteers must have the COVID vaccine to volunteer. A copy of proof of vaccination is to be provided to the Volunteer Manager at the interview.

General

Volunteers must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to volunteer.
Volunteer opportunities are available seven (7) days a week.
Most volunteer shifts are four (4) hours.
8:00am - 12:00pm, 12:00pm - 4:00pm, and 4:00pm - 8:00pm are the three primary shift times. Other shift times (and length of shift times) are available based on the volunteer service area and needs of the hospital or department in which the volunteer is volunteering.
Yes! A volunteer scheduled regularly may also pick up shifts.
New volunteers will train with a seasoned volunteer until the new volunteer feels comfortable with the responsibilities.
Yes! Volunteers may request time off for travel, appointments, family in town, etc. The process on how to request time off is discussed at orientation.
Yes! You may request to adjust your schedule with the Volunteer Director if necessary should your circumstances change. You may increase or reduce the number of volunteer hours you commit as long as you meet the two (2) 4-hour shifts per month minimum requirement. Colleton Medical requests that Volunteers not adjust their schedule too frequently as that does increase the workload of other Volunteers.

PRN volunteering

‘PRN’ stands for the Latin phrase pro re nata, which means “as the situation demands” or “as needed.”
Yes! You should ask about being a PRN volunteer. PRN volunteers are not regularly scheduled but select days/times they want to volunteer based on available openings and their schedule.
Yes! PRN volunteers are required to volunteer a minimum of two (2) 4-hour shifts per month but may choose to volunteer more than that if desired.
